Summary

Hormonal acne, also called adult acne, is among the most common skin diseases affecting 1 in 4 adults.

It is created by disruption of hormone production , like the estrogen, the progesterone, or male hormones. androgens » which, produced in excessive quantities, can cause a malfunction in the production of the sebaceous glands in men or women.

In this article we will cover the following points:

  1. How does adult acne manifest?
  2. What are the main cases of hormonal imbalance that can cause acne?
  3. Adult acne is exacerbated by external factors such as diet, stress or too much sun exposure
  4. Which herbs to treat hormonal acne naturally?
  5. Which anti-acne cosmetic routine to adopt?
  6. Complete your routine with "in" treatments

1. How does adult acne manifest?

Acne is an inflammatory disease of the pilosebaceous follicle.

Each pilosebaceous follicle consists of a hair, at the base of which is a sebaceous gland. This gland, under the influence of hormones, secretes an excess of thick sebum.

In this case, the normal elimination of sebum is blocked by dead cells clogging the pores of the skin.

This favorable environment for the proliferation of microbial agents leads to the appearance of microcysts, comedones (blackheads) or whiteheads.

In women, the pimples sit at the lower face level extending towards the neck. The lesions are few, but inflammatory.

At men's, the lesions are concentrated in the back.

2. What are the main cases of hormonal imbalance that can lead to acne?

  • Pre-menstrual Syndrome

Some women are prone to an acne breakout, 2 to 7 days before having their period, related to premenstrual syndrome (SPM).

PMS can be of physiological origin, that is to say associated with a natural hormonal imbalance of estrogen dominance (very common) at puberty or in perimenopause.

It can also be linked to poorly adapted or poorly dosed hormonal treatment, or amplified by a psychological imbalance (chronic stress, emotional shock).

  • PCOS

Sometimes female acne can also be attributed to a malfunction of the ovaries: Polycystic Ovary Syndrome or PCOS

PCOS is the most common hormonal disease in women of childbearing age, according to Inserm. This disorder leads to excessive production of androgen hormones and an increase in testosterone levels in the blood. Disturbances of ovulation or even increased hairiness result.

  • Endometriosis

Endometriosis can also cause acne. It occurs when the endometrium (the lining that lines the inside of the uterus) grows outside the uterus and affects other organs. This patient affects approximately 1 in 10 women of childbearing age.

  • Contraception

L’stoppage of the pill contraceptive, an incorrect pill or a change of pill are all factors often linked to a rash.

Most hormonal contraceptives contain both estrogen and progestin.

The risk of acne breakouts may be increased because some contraceptives contain progesterone which has an androgenic effect on your body.

Hormonal / or cortisone-based treatments are also factors in the appearance of acne.

The "medicated" acne will stop with the end of the treatment.

Some forms of acne may require establishing a hormonal balance with a healthcare professional.

  • The pregnancy

This form of acne is temporary, due to the rise in hormone levels, especially in the middle of the first trimester when the high secretion of progesterone is conducive to the explosion of this dermatosis.

 Symptoms gradually disappear post-partum.

Some women, with a history of acne during puberty for example, will have more risk factors to develop it.

For others, they will see their acne diminish during this period.

3. Adult acne is exacerbated by external factors

75% of our hormonal balance depends on our lifestyle.

  • The stress

After a period of stress, it is not uncommon to observe the appearance of comedones. Recurrent stress and peaks of cortisol (stress hormone) unbalance our hormonal functioning.

A good reason to take up sports, yoga or choose an activity that promotes physical and cerebral relaxation!

  • The use of poor quality cosmetics

Alcohols, perfumes, contained in certain creams, soaps or lotions can be irritating, drying for the skin. The pH of the face is 5.5, while that of industrial soap is around 10! The soap will then disturb the PH of the skin by stripping what protects our skin on the surface: the hydrolipidic film.

Products that are too greasy, too oily, can also amplify the production of sebum and therefore the appearance of imperfections.

Today we know that endocrine disruptors that we still too often find in cosmetics (PEG, phtalates..) disturb our hormonal system.

By choosing cosmetics formulated with natural ingredients, you optimize your chances of finding a good hormonal balance

  • Sun exposure

A real fake friend. The sun will dry out the skin giving an impression of improvement, but the improvement will be short-lived as it is very common to see a rebound after the exposure.

To avoid it, a non-comedogenic sunscreen index 50 is essential, also limiting the risk of scarring.

  • A bad lifestyle

Tobacco, pollution, unbalanced diet (too salty, too greasy, too sweet) will strongly contribute to the development of inflammatory acne.

The skin is the mirror of the saturation of the organs responsible for eliminating waste, in particular the liver whose functions are linked to those of the sebaceous glands. When it can no longer properly carry out its work of cleaning the blood, the waste is evacuated by the sebaceous glands which secrete sebum. That's why eating better is the first step to reducing sources of waste.

Scientific observations show that a poor diet would activate the secretion of insulin and testosterone, which would influence the appearance of acne.
