Summary

A head of hair has between 100,000 and 150,000 hairs, but not all heads are created equal!

The lifespan of a hair in men is about 3 years, against 4 to 7 years in women.

When a hair dies, a new hair replaces it, causing the first to fall out.

The human being loses between 50 and 100 hairs per day, a little more autumn, a little less in the spring.

Beyond that, the loss is considered pathological and should lead to consideration of a consultation.

To understand this process and how to limit its consequences, we will discuss:

  1. What Causes Hair Loss?
  2. How does hair loss manifest itself in men and women?
  3. What other factors can cause hair loss?
  4. Which herbs are recommended for hair loss?
  5. Which food supplements against hair loss?
  6. Which vitamins are effective against hair loss?
  7. What care for an anti-hair loss routine?

1. What causes hair loss?

Hair loss is a normal process, usually imperceptible due to hair renewal.

The hair is constantly renewed, following a cycle en 3 phases: they grow, die and then fall. These cycles have a duration of 3 to 7 years depending on the individual. During life, 20 to 25 cycles follow one another. It is therefore normal to lose hair, but certain periods of life are characterized by greater hair loss.

It exists 2 types of hair loss to distinguish:

  • reactive hair loss ,
  • gradual hair loss.

Since these hair losses do not have the same causes, the treatments will therefore be different.

Reactive hair loss as its name suggests, occurs punctually in response to an event, It can be stress, pregnancy, a change of season, fatigue, illness, iron deficiency in particular... Hair loss in this case can appear from 2 to 3 months after the event.

Gradual hair loss also called androgenetic alopecia lasts over time, and can gradually lead to baldness.

It now affects 21% of the population, including half of men over 50 and 40% of women, particularly affected after menopause.

2. How does hair loss in women manifest?

As in men but more gradually, hair loss in women is manifested by a progressive thinning of the hair on the top of the head. Loss of volume, more brittle hair found on the brush or floor and the hair is getting lighter gradually.

When a woman loses her hair abnormally, she is first advised to consult her doctor. The latter will then prescribe a blood test to look for a possible iron deficiency.

If the fall persists for more than 6 months, the possibility of seasonal or reactive hair loss is ruled out and can be considered to be a androgenetic alopecia which, as its name suggests, depends on 2 factors: hormones and genetics.

The hormonal drop which begins from 35/40 years old, causes a drop in pH at the level of the scalp which can promote a decrease in microcirculation and an acceleration of hair cycles causing a loss of general hair density.

At menopause, female hormones (estrogens) drop dramatically while male hormones (androgens) remain at the same level. Dysfunction of the ovaries or adrenal glands may be the cause. This imbalance leads to hypersensitivity to male hormones which weakens the hair follicles and triggers an acceleration of the hair's life cycle.

When we know that each person benefits on average, for their entire life, from a capital of about 25 hair cycles, it is easy to understand that if the rate of hair cycles accelerates, the hair capital will be consumed very quickly. As a result, hair growth will be impaired early.

This type of hair loss concerns on average 40% of women from the age of 50, and 25% of women can be affected at a younger age, from 35 years old.

female pattern baldness also exists, although it is rarer than in humans. This baldness is revealed by a progressive and more or less localized reduction of the hair giving an appearance of less and less dense capillary mass. The hair thins out and becomes more and more sparse.

3. How does hair loss  manifest in men?

Many men are affected by progressive hair loss, mainly in Caucasian men. It would concern:

  • 30% of men aged 30;
  • 40% of men aged 40;
  • 50% of 50-year-old men;
  • 80% from 70 years old.

Between the ages of 20 and 35, it is not uncommon for some men to see their hair sparse and their skull gradually become bald. Hair loss is usually marked by the progressive release of the forehead (on the two frontal gulfs), the temples or the top of the man's skull (the tonsure appears).

As for women, progressive hair loss in men is due to a shortening of the growth phase of the hair which prematurely decreases its life cycle.

male pattern baldness, often of genetic cause, can be treated and the progressive loss of hair slowed down.

As we have seen, age, hormonal variations or even heredity can impact the density of the scalp and the vigor of the hair. But other events can be the cause of hair loss.

4. What other factors can cause hair loss?

Several factors are at risk:

  • Stress, fatigue, weight loss
  • Pregnancy and childbirth:  after the birth of a child, the woman's body undergoes significant hormonal changes that can promote hair loss, make it more brittle, less shiny
  • The change of season
  • An emotional shock
  • A disease: thyroid problem, diabetes, anemia...
  • Taking certain medications: Chemotherapy and radiotherapy can cause significant or even total hair loss. During chemotherapy treatment, 2 out of 3 women lose their hair. It is possible to ask the doctor to prescribe a cooling cap, helping to reduce the risk of hair loss during chemotherapy.
  • Tensions on the scalp due to excessive hairstyles, too hot water when rinsing or too strong a hair dryer, unsuitable hair products
  • An unbalanced diet (iron deficiency for example).

A healthy diet, comprising 80% plant products will beautify your hair!

5. Which anti-hair loss food supplements?

  • spirulina
  • It is a green-colored microalgae that belongs to the family of cyanobacteria. It is one of the existing food supplements in different forms: powder, capsule or even in the form of flakes.                                   People suffering from alopecia (hair loss) are often advised to keratin, a protein made up of amino acids such as methionine and cysteine. This protein has the effect of strengthening and optimizing hair regrowth, but also of controlling sebum secretion. Spirulina has the incredible advantage of being composed of all the amino acids allowing the synthesis of proteins, including cysteine and methionine. In addition, it contains interesting contributions of zinc and vitamin B group which are essential for the prevention of hair loss, as well as their drying out.

  • Zinc
  • Zinc is a trace element with powerful antioxidant action, a zinc deficiency can lead to abnormal hair loss. He fights against alopecia by taking care of the scalp, of the hair follicles and some microcirculation scalp blood.

Zinc is a essential for the body, it allows the protein synthesis (including keratin) andDNA for cell formation. It also allows the collagen production, essential constituent of skin and hair. So it will help redensify the hair mass.

  • Silicon
  • This trace element is also a essential element in the composition of hair. It contributes to the elasticity of collagen, which makes up tissues and skin. It stimulates the production of keratin, activates blood circulation in the scalp and limit the excessive sebum secretion. Its nourishing and stimulating action gives hair shine and suppleness, while promoting its natural growth and hair renewal.

    6. Which vitamins are effective against hair loss?

THE group B vitamins stimulate the production of keratin. In particular, we recommend:

Vitamin B2 Riboflavin : Riboflavin helps your cells grow and function properly. One of the symptoms of riboflavin deficiency is hair loss. Although riboflavin deficiency is rare, if you don't get enough riboflavin from your diet, you are at risk of hair loss.

Vitamin B6 : associated with cystine, an amino acid, promotes hair growth and strengthens it. It is regularly used to accelerate hair growth, allows boost hair health, in particular by the action of the amino acid on the production of keratin. Indeed, the latter depends largely on the action of cystine and its effects are increased tenfold when combined with vitamin B6. Doctors can recommend this solution to people who suffer from the onset of baldness, alopecia or hair loss following childbirth.                           Vitamin found in bananas, liver, kidneys, dairy products.

Vitamine B8 : Many food supplements intended to strengthen the hair contain vitamin B8, also called Biotin. It participates in the renewal of hair cells. So much so that a biotin deficiency will have the visible consequence of less dense hair. By helping to ensure a constant renewal of the hair, it allows to maintain an always equal volume. It is found naturally in egg yolks, liver or mushrooms.

       Le + Naturo

The opinion of Fabienne CROCQ, Naturopath, holistic beauty & nutrition coach.

“Self-massage softens the scalp and activates microcirculation to better transport the nutrients necessary for the vitality of the hair to the hair follicle. 2-3 times a week, rest your elbows on the table, tilt your head forward, and place one hand on either side of your head, fingers spread. Massage the scalp with your fingertips and move the skin over the scalp using small circular movements. Gradually rise to the top of the head. Massage for 5 minutes with the shampoo or with a suitable hair care product.
